Singapore Transit: Do You Need to Clear Immigration?

Travelator after landing at Changi Airport Singapore Terminal 3

A. Do You Need to Clear Immigration During Transit in Singapore?

No, you usually do not need to clear immigration when transiting in Singapore.

As long as your flights are on the same booking and your luggage is checked through to your final destination, you can stay inside the transit area and go directly to your next gate.

You only need to clear immigration if:

  • you leave the transit area
  • you book separate tickets (self-transfer)
  • you need to collect and re-check your baggage

B. Singapore Changi Airport Transit Process From My Experience

This guide is based on my transit experience with Singapore Airlines, flying from Jakarta to Tokyo via Changi on 31 March 2026 with a relatively short transit time of 1 hour 50 minutes, and returning from Tokyo to Jakarta on 22 April 2026 with a longer transit time of 5 hours 25 minutes.

1. After Landing, Follow the Transfer Signs

Once you arrive at Changi Airport, simply follow the “Transfer” signs. The signage is very clear, so you don’t need to guess or ask around.

As long as you keep following the signs, you will remain inside the transit area. Pay attention to the terminal information on the signs so you know which terminal you have arrived at.

There is no security screening after landing. You can go directly to the transfer area. The security screening will happen later at the gate of your next flight, not immediately after arrival.

2. Check Your Next Flight Gate and Terminal

Check the screen boards in the transfer area to find:

  • your next terminal, to know whether you need to stay or transfer
  • your next gate

If your next flight is in the same terminal, you can proceed directly to your gate. If it is in a different terminal, you will need to transfer before heading to your gate.

You can also check your next terminal and gate through the official Changi Airport website. If you do not have mobile data, do not worry. Just connect to the free Changi Airport WiFi. It is easy and quick to use, so you can open the website right away to check your next terminal and gate.

3. Transfer Between Terminals (If Needed)

If you need to change terminals, follow the signs to the Skytrain. This is the fastest and most efficient way to move between terminals, and the system is well connected.

Even if you change terminals, you will still remain within the transit area, so there is no need to go through immigration.

At the Skytrain area, you will find two sides for different directions. Make sure you take the correct one based on your next terminal.

For example, I landed at Terminal 3 Changi Airport and my next flight was from Terminal 2, so I followed the signs and took the Skytrain marked “Skytrain to T2 (T3 → T2)”. The signs are large and easy to spot, so it’s quite straightforward as long as you follow them carefully.

There are also screens at the platform showing how many minutes until the next Skytrain arrives, so you can easily track the waiting time. The Skytrain operates daily from 5:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

4. Head to Your Boarding Gate

Once you reach the correct terminal, continue following the signs to your boarding gate. The layout is straightforward, and gates are clearly marked, making it easy to navigate.

While walking toward your gate, you will quickly notice Changi Airport’s distinctive atmosphere, filled with lush greenery, floral displays, and warm lighting that make the environment feel calm and visually striking.

In some areas, you can hear the sound of running water from indoor ponds surrounded by greenery, which creates an atmosphere that almost feels like walking through a tropical indoor forest. It does not feel like a typical airport corridor. It feels more like a place where you would want to slow down and explore.

Because of this, it is surprisingly easy to lose track of time while walking through the airport. You might feel tempted to stop, take photos, or walk around just to see more of the design. There are also many shops along the route if you have time to look around.

However, keep your boarding time in mind. Some gates can be quite far, so it is better to reach your gate first and understand the distance before deciding to explore, especially if your time is limited, unless you have plenty of time during your transit.

5. Go Through Security at the Gate

When you arrive at your gate, it is common that the gate has not opened yet. You will need to wait outside the gate until the security screening begins. There are usually plenty of seats available in this area, along with nearby restrooms. Below is a picture of seating area outside and inside the boarding gate.

The security screening usually starts closer to the boarding time. Before going through security, make sure you:

  • use the restroom first, as restrooms are typically not available inside the gate area
  • take out your laptop from your bag during screening, as you will be asked to do so
  • finish or discard any liquids, as water bottles must be empty before entering

I once forgot that I still had water in my bag, and the staff asked whether I wanted to drink it or throw it away. Since I would get another drink later on the flight, I chose to throw it away.

After passing security, you will wait inside the gate area until boarding begins. Boarding is usually done in groups based on your seat zone.

There are water refill stations available inside the gate area, so you can refill your bottle after security if needed. You can the water refill station on the picture below.

C. Important Things I Noticed When Transferring in Singapore

  1. The signage is very clear and easy to follow, so you can move around the airport without much confusion.
  2. There is no security screening after landing. You can go straight to the transfer area. Security screening is done later at the gate of your next flight.
  3. To check your next terminal or gate, you can look at the flight information screens in the airport. You can also check it in advance on the official Changi Airport website.
  4. Changi Airport is very clean, organized, and well maintained. The space feels comfortable, with soft carpet flooring in many areas that makes walking more pleasant.
  5. Restrooms are located outside the gate area. Make sure to use the restroom before going through security at your gate, as they are typically not available inside.
  6. Not all restrooms in Changi Airport have bidets or water jets. If you are used to them, this is something to keep in mind.
  7. During security screening, all liquids must be finished or discarded, and water bottles must be empty before entering.
  8. You will also be asked to take your laptop out of your bag during the security check.

D. Do You Need Mobile Data During Transit in Singapore?

No, you usually don’t need mobile data during transit.

Changi Airport provides free WiFi throughout the terminal, and it was easy to connect during my transit, so you can stay online without using your own mobile data.
